Federal Tax CreditsFederal tax credits for certain energy efficient home improvements are still available through 2010. Qualifying improvements such as windows, doors, insulation, furnaces, air conditioners, and water heaters must be made prior to December 31, 2010. The federal tax credit is still 30% of your investment, up to a maximum credit of $1500. the energy efficient upgrades must be made to an existing home which must be your principle residence. New construction, vacation homes and rental properties do not qualify. The tax credit for geothermal systems remains at 30% of the total system installed cost, with no maximum limits. The credit for geothermal systems is available until December 31, 2016. Residential solar energy systems and small residential wind turbines are subject to the same deadlines and credit amounts as geothermal. These credits apply to existing homes and new construction, but principle residences and second homes. Rental properties do not qualify. Give us a call or see www.energystar.gov for more details.
